BetConstruct Secures New License to Enter the Danish Gambling Market

Published on: 13/04/2023

One of the leading iGaming and betting solutions providers, BetConstruct, received a new gambling license in Denmark last week as the operator continued its expansion across the European continent. The Danish Gambling Authority, Spillemyndigheden, issued a betting and online casino license to BetConstruct, allowing the operator to provide sports betting, online casino, live casino games, and retail solutions for betting shops. The new license also aids the operator’s growth across Nordic states, as it already holds a Swedish gambling license.

Besides developing and offering sports betting and online casino products, BetConstruct offers data feed, turnkey, and white-label software services to other gambling operators. The provider and operator is an active vendor of online casinos and other iGaming businesses as it ventures into the brick-and-mortar segment in an effort to help land-based casinos develop and deploy online operations. Additionally, ongoing research at BetConstruct is actively hunting for AI-based solutions that could boost the gambling sector globally. The operator has made significant progress since its establishment over ten years ago and created a voice-activated gambling assistant called Hoory. BetConstruct is still working on that project, while the development of an AI-based live scouting tool, AJNA, and an AI-powered risk management tool, Umbrella, is also in progress. The provider states that the aforementioned tools are designed specifically to increase player safety as they will be able to detect problem gambling traits along with other illicit activities like abuse and cheating.

The Danish gambling market is the 11th regulated gambling jurisdiction BetConstruct will enter to offer its iGaming products and services. The provider is already a legal entity in The Isle of Man, Italy, Malta, Romania, South Africa, Sweden, Ukraine, Belgium, France, and the United Kingdom after securing the necessary gambling licenses from the respective gambling regulators of each jurisdiction. Obtaining a gambling license from the Danish Gambling Authority is not an easy task, as Spillemyndigheden is one of the sternest gambling regulators in the world that is actively involved in battling illegal activities and operators that threaten the integrity of the gambling sector. Under strict supervision, the gambling market in Denmark bounced back to record notable spikes in Gross Gambling Revenue (GGR) across all gambling segments. The market, mainly the land-based casinos, struggled due to the restrictions imposed during the Covid-19 pandemic for over two years before 2022. In Q4 2022, the Danish Gambling Authority collected a GGR of DKK 1,762 million, marking a 4.5 percent year-on-year increase.

The spike in the GGR comes as a result of the increased gambling activity in Denmark. As more and more players indulge in the different segments of gambling, the responsibility of the nation’s regulator increases. The responsibility of licensed operators in the country also rises simultaneously. Obtaining a gambling license in Denmark is a tedious task, and to retain this hard-earned permit, operators have to comply with the rules and regulations set forth by Spillemyndigheden. Failure to comply with the gambling law will force the regulator to issue a massive fine. Continuation of the violation will put the operator’s license at stake, with the regulator possessing the power to revoke it. However, BetConstruct is one of many operators around the globe which are constantly working to boost their player safety measures and promote safer gambling. In Denmark, the operator intends to collaborate with gambling operators and software providers. It will also work with marketing affiliates and payment processors.

Self-exclusion player count touches the 40,000 mark

There are multiple pillars on which the aspect of player safety lies. One of them is the implementation of a self-exclusion register where players can voluntarily register themselves to be excluded from all legal gambling activity in that particular jurisdiction. Spillemyndigheden is one of the few countries around the globe that has had this tool in place for almost 11 years. The Register of Voluntarily Excluded Players (ROFUS) went live in 2012, and since then, the number of self-excluded players has kept increasing significantly. In January last year, about 30,000 Danish gamblers were registered on ROFUS. A little over a year later, that number increased to 40,000.

82 illegal websites blocked in 2022

Licensed operators are obliged to maintain constant ROFUS access to ensure that their services are inaccessible to the gamblers registered on the platform. If any licensed operator fails to do so, they could be on the receiving end of a massive fine. A repeat of the same violation can put their gambling permit at risk. However, illegal gambling providers do not follow the gambling law of the country because they do not hold valid gambling licenses. Hence, the fight against unlicensed operators is crucial for the Danish Gambling Authority and other regulators around the world.

The regulator recently revealed that it blocked 82 websites that were offering unlicensed gambling services last year. This was the highest number of illegal domains Spillemyndigheden blocked in a single year. In addition to that, the regulator also mentioned that there are two more cases against illegal domains lined up. One of which will be in the first quarter of this year and the other will take place in the third quarter. After blocking 82 illegal gambling websites, the total count of blocked domains offering unlicensed gambling since 2012 has risen to 227 and is expected to be on an exponential rise for years to come.
